iPad Camera Proof in the SDK

February 7th, 2010 Simon No comments

Apple-iPadThe software development kit for the Apple iPad came out just a few days ago and the developers have been uncovering all kinds of amazing things about Apple’s new bid for market dominance (which, like the iPhone, will most probably succeed).

Around the same time that the SDK came out, people starting bringing out images of Steve Jobs’ unveiling of the tablet. The zoom in showed what might be a camera on top of the device Steve was using in the demo. While having a camera is not part of the known features of the iPad, it can also be a little surprise that Apple plans to announce when the device becomes commercially available.

Some have also pointed out the possibility that while this current version of the iPad may not have the camera, later version will (such as the rumored larger iPad 2). Also, it is possible that the camera will come as a part of the 3G version of the iPad –just like GPS which is not present in the non-3G version.

Now, developers tweaking around with the SDK have confirmed that Apple has made provisions for camera functions. One screenshot clearly shows an option to “take photo” –a reference that infers to an existing camera to be used.

Since the demonstration units given to the press at the launch of the device did not feature the camera (it was the non-3G version to go circled around), many cannot confirm if the device will actually have a camera when it finally comes out on retail. With features such as multitasking and flash compatibility still not present, there could be more added unto the device later.

The Telegraph UK has the full story on the iPad camera.

Sony taking interest in Tablets

February 5th, 2010 Simon No comments

Sony TabletLast year, Sony was not taking a keen interest in tablet technology. With their existing line of VAIO laptops and net books, it was unlikely that the Japanese electronics giant would give the fledgling medium a second look.

Now that the Apple iPad tablet is poised to totally wipe the floor with all the existing eBook readers such as the Kindle and Sony’s own Reader, the Japanese company is taking a new perspective with the Tablet. During a press conference in Tokyo; a chief financial officer from Sony stated that “that is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a product”.

With the buzz about the Apple iPad ever increasing, it comes as to no surprise that computer manufacturers are doing a double take in their approach to the tablet. Even HP, who was already developing its own tablet device, will be facing some stiff competition from Apple.

So far, no word has been given as to what Sony is planning to do with its tablet ideas. It is also interesting to note that it will be Sony electronics entering the tablet market and not the mobile phone manufacturer, Sony Ericsson. With the focus on the tablet being towards more of a computer than a mobile phone, it is only natural that the folks from VAIO would be giving the new medium a try.

The smallest computer device from Sony is the VAIO P; this extra mini laptop fits nicely into a nice long purse for travel. With the tablet being a little less restricted in size, it would be interesting what cool form Sony’s tablet would take. One advantage Sony would definitely have over the iPad is in having games; with Sony’s current lineup of first party titles, they have a sure market for their device.

The Google Nexus One: A Quick Overview

February 4th, 2010 Simon No comments

Google Nexus One 4In the world today people need a fast phone to accompany their fast-paced life.  The Google name was associated with a search engine yesterday, and today they are selling mobile phones.  Google surprised us all by releasing the Nexus One smartphone.

When you get your hands on the Nexus One you will get the feeling of the iPhone more than that of other Smartphones.  While Motorola keeps the physical QWERTY keyboard with the Backflip, Google Nexus One lacks any substantial physical buttons.  In fact, there are some good functional buttons on the phone: the power button and the volume control.  The rest of the control is provided through the touch sensitive screen.

When users get it out from the box they will hold in their hands an 11.5 mm deep and 130 grams in weight phone.  The first thing they will notice is the big 3.7 inch touch screen, which is one of the biggest touch screens on the phone market.

Inside the Android phone there is a powerful Snapdragon 1 GHz processor. So, when it comes to Nexus One the 3D graphics, internet browsing and applications running at the same time they can forgot how to close applications, because they don’t need it.  The creators, were careful when they designed the Smartphone to deliver a really smart, energy saving phone, so do not be surprised if you see the Nexus One self-adjusting its brightness or turning down the processor when not used.  Still, there is a lack of long battery life there, because continuous use of the phone may shorten the battery life.  The official statement will tell us that there is about 10 days standby, 7 hours talk time and video playback and 20 hours of audio playback.

The Google Nexus One uses the Android 2.1 operating system that has some notable features.  When we say Android operating system, we have Google Voice, so an assigned Google Voice number to the phone to make all the calls and messaging.  There is an upgraded Voice keyboard also and a voice enabled text field.  The Android 2.1 makes typing easier because one can just talk to the phone and then they can edit the converted text later.  The Nexus One has an awesome background change also, with the Live Wallpaper feature.  It is fun to change the existing wallpaper to a new one; especially the best ones.

Google Nexus One 3You can choose between many options so your phone can reflect your mood.  The gorgeous 480 x 800 OLED touch screen catches the eye at the exact second when the eye is seen. Another notable feature is the noise cancellation.  Of course this feature is noticeable for those who are on the other side of the line, but it is does a great job when it comes to noise.  It cancels the wind noise that substantially improves the calls quality.  This feature is automatic and the technology used for this is very simple: there is another microphone on the back that tracks inbound noise.  Now is the time, when you can relax, and lower down your voice when talking on the Nexus phone.

iSight on the iPad and Sequel Rumors

February 4th, 2010 Simon No comments

Apple-iPadWhen the Nexus One launched, it did not take long before talks of a potential Nexus Two or Nexus 1.5 popped up. Technology loves its successors and sequels and it makes perfect sense that we are always waiting for the next big thing. Anyway, it turns out that there really will be a Nexus two and that the idea of a keyboard toting Google phone is not far from reality.

Now take that same example and apply it to the rumors regarding the iPad.

Less than a full week since Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPad, rumors that a much larger device similar to the iPad will be launched. Where the iPad was much closer to a mobile phone in specs, the new iPad 2 would be much more similar to a Mac.

Another set of rumors pointed to the iSight being present in the iPad Steve Jobs was holding during the unveiling of the Apple tablet. Images of the iPad’s internal frame showed a slot just about the right size for the iSight camera, though it can also be the ambient light sensor. Officially, Apple has not included the iSight as part of the iPad’s specs though they can spring it on us as a last minute surprise when the device becomes available for retail.

As for the news regarding the iPad 2, it is a very probable possibility that a more powerful version of the iPad is already in the works; though a tablet with such high end specs would be geared more towards attracting the niche market of tech lovers rather than general users. There are already plenty of reports stating that Apple is already far along the development work on their next tablet device.

Coming this April: iPad

February 3rd, 2010 Simon No comments

Apple-iPadAfter a few days of wondering when the much coveted Apple tablet will actually in the UK, it has finally been announced that the iPad 3G will be arriving the UK in April.

Of course, this means that the non-3G version will be made available at a slightly earlier time than that (estimates place a launch at late March). Right now, the big question is whether a mobile network operator has managed to snag an exclusivity deal for the device.  With 3G network connectivity being a major issue; it would certainly help to have choices to choose from.

In the US, it has been reported that AT&T’s 3G network is far from capable of handling the needs of the iPad. This comes as a major blow to the network provider who has already been the target of criticisms from iPhone users regarding slow, congested and unstable 3G connections.

In the UK however, things are a little different. While O2 has had its share of complaints from iPhone users, the general consensus is that local 3G networks are far more capable and prepared for the heavy bandwidth users. At the very least, Vodafone’s efforts in strengthening their network for their iPhone launch this January has enabled the network operator to keep up with 3G demands. Just a week back, they re-released the Femtocell Sure Signal 3G booster that uses broadband connections to provide 3G in homes where 3G signals are weak.

The Apple iPad comes with a 9.7 inch touch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and is capable of handling games, EBooks, browsing and other functions. It is powered by a 1GHz A4 processor though it does not have multi tasking capabilities.

We Love SMS

February 1st, 2010 Simon No comments

TextingIt comes as to no surprise; the human society is addicted to text messaging.

Chatting, instant messaging, email; these various forms of digital communication are quite immersive and people often find themselves suddenly spending hours and hours using these channels of communication. They are fun and more importantly, addictive. When BlackBerry made email easy to access, the term Crackberry was coined to refer to those who became email addicts.

But more than these forms of communication, one GSM-based technology has been lording over most other forms of getting in touch: the SMS.

As of 2009, residents of the UK send about 11 million messages every hour. That’s over 200 million messages per day, and to total the entire number of messages sent last year, 96.8 billion. Oh yes, we love to write, send and receive SMS messages. Messaging from one mobile phone to another can have so many reasons and that is the reason why today’s society relies on it so much.

SMS allows you to send information instantly without having to spend on an expensive voice call. It also allows you to send detailed information such as a task list or an address (information you would not want to lose to miscommunication in a voice call).

Is this a bad thing for us? Not really. The Mobile Data Association compiled the message usage rates of the UK from information submitted by various network operators. There is completely nothing wrong with the numbers. In fact, one can even say that it is expected. The only real reason we are all so astounded is because we have yet to fully accept the fact that mobile phones have now become crucial to our lives.

Want to read the exact numbers regarding the increasing number of SMS messages being sent? –head straight to Softpedia for all the answers.
