Samsung Omnia Lite B7300. Touchtastic

June 30th, 2009 Martin No comments

One of the worst things about all the touchscreen phones we’ve come across recently is that too many seem to have had their UI’s imported from earlier, none-touchscreen versions of the phones. This most often means that while you’re using your fingers or thumbs to navigate, you still aren’t convinced the phone you’re using is a full touchscreen device. Not so with Samsung, who’s nifty TouchWiz interface is now up to version 2.0 and is improving in leaps and bounds. Designed from scratch with the touchscreen user in mind, it allows all your tapping, scrolling and dragging to feel as naturally in tune with the phone’s function as possible.

With TouchWiz 2.0 at its core then, the Samsung Omnia Lite is a phone we think a fair number of people are going to get a huge amount of satisfaction from. Basically a slimmed down version of the other Omnia series phones, the lite still gives you pretty much all the smartphone functions you could need, just not at the very highest specs. And we’re all for it, because unlike its chunkier relations, the Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 is a supermodel thin 13mm, a not-too-heavy-considering-the-decent-battery 100g, and shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg. And it also excels in the looks department, with a choice of two bold colour designs to set off the standard brushed metal and cool cellular pattering that’s standard.

So for all the GPS’ing, WiFi’ing and 3G’ing you’d expect from a smartphone, but in a much neater package, the Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 could well be the phone for you. The only bad news is it’s not due out for some time – we’re currently hearing October but that might well change, so keep yours eyes peeled for more updates. And why not pass a little bit of that time reading this Samsung Omnia Lite review.

Samsung S5600

June 30th, 2009 Simon No comments

Samsung S5600The all new Samsung S5600 touch phone is a breathtakingly beautifully designed phone. Its slick design gives touch phones a new perspective. Samsung has focused on providing its users an exceptionally big touch screen (2.8inch) and as usual it comes with its unique TouchWiz interface for great navigation and web browsing.

Samsung S5600 packs in a great 3megapixel camera capable of capturing both photos and videos. Its exceptional quality comes from the 240 x 320 pixel display unit QVGA. The unique accelerometer allows you to flip from portrait to landscape as required. This phone is designed for easy web browsing and comes with quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz. This also supports UMTS 900/2100MHz dual band and HSDPA. All these enable high speed data transmission.

Samsung S5600 incorporates a music identifier whereby a shot clip could be recorded and run through the Shazam’s Find Music service. The adapted Gesture Lock feature allows the user to unlock the phone by writing a letter on the screen.

Samsung has focused on providing ample space for storage and therefore includes an impressive built in 80Mb of storage and an expandable microSD card slot for larger memory banks. It stands tall in the standby area with 12.5 days and packs in enough battery power to go on for 3 hours.

The 1000 mAh battery does all this. S5600 has a great music player to add more hype and supports the 2.1v Bluetooth. It is packed with lots more surprises and somehow Samsung has done it again with a great phone.

Samsung has planned to make this available in May 2009 and first launch will happen in Europe but should catch up to other areas quickly. However, no pricing data were released by the company. The Samsung S5600 offers very attractive contracts and easy payment schemes are available for those wishing to pay up in installments.

Also please check out this Samsung S5600 review for more information. This is a great phone and surely worth the buy.

Samsung Omnia Pro B7610. Jekyll and Hyde in your hand

June 30th, 2009 Martin No comments

Jekyll and Hyde. That’s all someone needed to say: Jeckyll and Hyde. Someone, somewhere at some point should have just yelled those words out at any of the early meetings Samsung must have held about the upcoming Samsung Omnia Pro. And why? Well, it’s being reported that the Omnia will some with two UI’s. That’s right, two User Interface’s for you to choose from, or even switch between at the press of a button. One, tentatively called “pro” will be geared towards business users, making internet, email and other so-called professional features more easily accessible. The other, “media” will streamline all the, well, media options (video, music, etc.).

Now, far be it from us to judge something before it’s even been released, but we judge this a terrible idea! We’re obviously sure which of these two UI’s will be the evil one of the two, but you just know that one will be poorer. And you also know that not only will one be worse than the other, you will also without doubt that if only Samsung had allocated all their tech geeks / developers / graphic designers / etc. to all work together on one all-encompassing UI for the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610, then they would have produced a far, far better phone. Divide and conquer? More like divide and dilute, because no matter how good either is, we just can’t see how this is a good idea.

Anyway, enough ranting. The phone still has a kick-ass screen (3.5”, and incorporating some power-friendly, ultra-bright technology that should look mighty impressive), a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and all the other usual smartphone suspects, and it might be that you are a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde yourself, that the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 will satisfy your needs to be a suit-wearing “pro”-UI-using person by day, a ripped jeans, “media”-UI using type by evening. But we think you’ll be in the tiny majority even if that is the case. Check out a Samsung Omnia Pro review here, or watch the video below for a sneak peek of that screen.

Blackberry 9300 Gemini

June 29th, 2009 Simon No comments

Blackberry 9300 GeminiBlackberry is one of the most successful mobile phone brands ever and it’s widely known that each and every line they introduced became extremely successful. This is the very reason why we can safely assume that its new line; the Gemini is also going to be a great success. Blackberry first came up with the line Pluto and then the Magnum. Gemini is the latest addition to their portfolio and promises to give you a wide range of facilities which will make your life a better place. 9300 is the working model number Blackberry has given it. This indicates that the Blackberry 9300 Gemini will carry the 3G utility because in the past, all of Blackberry’s models which started with number 9 carried the 3G facility and Gemini will not break this trend. The 9300 Gemini is almost like anther Blackberry Curve 8900, but with 3G.
According to the little specs we have gotten here’s what Blackberry 9300 Gemini is going to be; the screen will be slightly larger and resolution also higher than the 8900. CPU will also be an upgraded one, although we don’t know exactly if this means the 9300 is going to have a better processor than the Blackberry Bold’s 624MHz one, but with Blackberry you’re always guaranteed with the best so you can expect it to be something better definitely.
Appearance wise, the housing is supposed to be silver with the keyboard of a little round nature than the Blackberry 8900. But other than this there isn’t much of a difference in appearance between the Blackberry 8900 and Storm. There is quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS and although WiFi and GPS are not confirmed we can safely assume that it’s going to be equipped with these. Check out the official Blackberry site for more information on the 9300’s release date. However it would not be probably around the end of this year or the beginning of 2010 as RIM just introduced the replacement for its Curve.
Although the Blackberry 9300 Gemini has not been officially announced checking up some of the 9300 Gemini contracts proposed online will give you a head start on where to look. Blackberry 9300 Gemini contracts and deals are a great way for you to own this awesome phone which would ideally be priced high initially. 9300 Gemini deals bring you the best offers by the leading service providers.

Sony Ericsson S312 Snapshot

June 29th, 2009 Simon No comments

sony-ericssons312multimediaphoneOut of the many budget phones already released or scheduled to be released this year, the Sony Ericsson S312 Snapshotstands out. This phone was previously known as the Athena but the name of the phone was changed later though this has not been confirmed officially. Complete details of the specifications have not been released yet but the phone is probably similar to the S302 which was last year’s budget phone with maybe slightly better specifications. The phone adopts the standard dreaded stick format but will probably feature a nice simple basic design and rounded edges. The phone comes with a normal numeric keypad with no special additional keys for media access. The display of the Sony Ericsson S312 Snapshot is a small screen allowing a 176 x 220 resolution.

The Sony Ericsson S312 Snapshots likely to have a low memory .Whether the memory is to be extendable or not has not been confirmed.

The phone probably has limited connectivity options. It might have a Bluetooth chip to enable fast data transfer. HSDPA connectivity is very unlikely.

The S312 Snapshotwill have only a main camera which might have a resolution of more than 2 MP. This camera will definitely not come with the autofocus feature which will definitely be disadvantageous. Videos cannot be recorded as this is a snapshot model.

The main disadvantage of this phone will surround the screen which is very small and can seem really cramped. The fixed focus camera is also likely to be poor even if the resolution is slightly higher. Advanced connectivity options are also likely to be rather limited which will be a big disadvantage.

This shouldn’t discourage phone buyers though. Until the full specifications are available all details on the phone are based on rumors and leaks. The phone is probably very affordable. Finally this might even turn out to be the best low price range on the market! Check Sony Ericsson’s own site for updates on the S312.

LG GC900 Viewty2

June 29th, 2009 Simon No comments

101243_lg-viewty-smart-gc900-11The GC900 Viewty Smart is one the latest phones in the Viewty series to be launched by LG this year. The handset has a basic design with a nice 3 inch WVGA touch screen. Photos, videos etc can also be viewed on this screen. The phone has the latest 3D S-Classe User Interface.
The internal memory of the phone is small but can be expanded up to 32 GB using the MicroSD card slot.

The LG GC900 Viewty Smart has decent connectivity options with Wi-Fi and HSDPA 7.2 allowing easy efficient high speed access to the internet. The user can view emails whenever they want to easily. The phone comes with an inbuilt Bluetooth chip allowing the user to transfer data easily within a close range.

As the phone is primarily a camera phone, it has an impressive 8 MP Autofocus camera with a xenon flash. The camera equips a Schneider-Kreuznach lens. The camera is also equipped with the geo-tagging feature allowing the user to find the coordinates of any object in an image taken. It also has smile recognition technology which, when activated, allows the user to take a photo only when the subject smiles. The touch shot photography application on the camera allows the user to focus on any object on the display screen by just touching it on the screen. This makes photos even sharper.

The LG GC900 Viewty Smart has DivX and Xvid video players allowing the user to play a wide variety of media using the phone.

In addition to the excellent camera features the phone also has The A-GPS utility making this phone a good option for anyone who goes on trips regularly.
The disadvantages of the phone surprisingly surround its camera. Some critics complain that with its price there are many other more impressive camera phones available in the market. The LG Viewty Smart is a long way off according to CNET.

Samsung S5230

June 29th, 2009 Simon No comments

Samsung S5230Out of the new phones scheduled to be released later this year, one that stands out as a striking middle range phone is the Samsung S5230. The phone comes in a block format. Nokia 2720 Fold. Cheap as chips.

June 29th, 2009 Martin No comments

With Nokia Life Tools offering Internet-less access to news, educational material and bits of entertinament, Ovi Mail offering 3-step, computer-less access to email account creation and a price tag that almost seems to be a mistake, the Nokia 2720 Fold is clearly a phone intended to make inroads into emerging markets. And why not. With more billions of people around the world not having phones than having them, there’s clearly one hell of a huge opportunity to be exploited. And like the good global capitalists they are, Nokia have no qualms in doing so.

And without being too cynical, maybe this really is a good thing. If people in parts of the world such as rural China suddenly find they can afford a phone that allows them access to the world’s news and information, then shouldn’t this be celebrated? And if the Nokia 2720 Fold is the phone to do it, then shouldn’t we support it? Well, why not. Someone’s always going to exploit someone else to make a profit, and if we get access to some crazy cheap phones along the way, who’s to say it’s such a bad thing.

The Nokia 2720 Fold will be released in the third quarter of this year, at a stupidly low 55 Euros (before any local taxes or subsidies are tacked on, mind). Check out the video below, or read a full Nokia 2720 fold review here.
