Nokia 3720 Classic. Drunkclumsy

August 14th, 2009 Martin No comments

Like most of the videos they make for themselves, Nokia’s effort for the Nokia 3720 Classic is pretty amusing in its innocence and, well, banality. Because although they prove their point very well – that the Nokia 3720 is about as tough a phone as you can possibly buy – they do so in this whimsical, almost surreal way that would actually wind us up if the phone wasn’t so impressively hard.

Because we all know that normal people only break there phones in one of two ways:

1 – Drunkness. Clearly the biggest cause of phone death man has ever known. From waking up to find your phone inexplicably floating in a glass of rum (check), to realising you dropped it down the toilet while drunkenly expelling stuff (check) to betting a friend you could hit another friend in the head with your phone from a distance of 30 metres (check)…

2 – Clumsiness. Can’t drink tea without spilling some all over your desk? Stub your toes at least once a week? Fall over inexplicably every now and then? Sit on, tread on, crush, drop or otherwise bully your phone? Then you, sir/madam, are a Clumsy Clive/Claire

Or, sometimes (for us all to often) a combination of those two ways. But you know what, this phone can withstand even the most inane, drunken, awkward, stupid, embarassing tumble you might take. It could have withstood that time when you might, hypothetically, have gotten into the shower with all your clothes on to sober up. Or the time you fell into the hotel pool. Or that other time you fell into a different hotel’s pool. Or that…

Admit it… your interested, aren’t you… then click here for the official page’s stats lowdown, or have a look at this Nokia 3720 classic review.

Nokia 6730 Classic. Big in heart

July 6th, 2009 Martin No comments

Many a small person in the past has claimed that good thing come in small packages, but now there’s even more proof to support our vertically challenged friends in the shape of the Nokia 6730 Classic. Weighing in at an almost bafflingly light 83 grams, this smartphone still manages to squeeze in a host of features found in its more obese cousins in the category. It may not have these features in there highest-end forms, but chances are you won’t even be looking at a phone this size/shape/colour/without a huge touchscreen if you want the very best of the quickest of the fanciest.

The 6730 Classic has no pretensions to being the best of the best, but it can very comfortably make claims towards being the lightest, neatest and slickest phone to be released for a while. The design is simply brilliant. Or brilliantly simple, you could say, because there’s not an extraneous flourish or a line out of place on the whole handset. And while the kind of 80’s looking white colour scheme has out vote, the black is also mighty nice.

And onboard is a surprising array of features, apps and gadgets. Most impressive in our book is Nokia’s own mapping system Ovi Maps. Coming pre-installed for free with turn-by-turn navigation for foot journey’s (you probably wouldn’t want to use it for your car anyway), a lovely 3D terrain option and a bunch of other flashy little options, the Nokia 6730 Classic is about as good as mapping gets on something this size. Add to this an okay camera, decent enough media playing and very decent email and internet access, and – it is wasn’t for the Vodafone-exclusivity deal – you’d have a phone that would suit many a pocket. Check out this Nokia 6730 review for a full list of the specs, and have a look at this video below.

Nokia 2730 Classic. A hit of the near future

June 24th, 2009 Martin No comments

These days, my gran used to say, you don’t get nothing for nothing. Thinking about it, she was right. But then it’s kind of been true for ever. Very rarely has anyone given things away for free. Nokia, though, are coming surprisingly close with the Nokia 2730 Classic. While not free, the quoted launch price of 80 Euros (before any localised taxes and subsidies, depending on your country) is obscenely low. Especially when you take a look at what it’s capable of:

  • 3G
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Nokia maps pre-installed
  • Bluetooth 2.0 +ED (stereo)
  • USB 2.0
  • Flash Lite 3.0
  • MIDP Java 2.1
  • 3.5mm audio socket
  • Multimedia player
  • FM radio
  • 1GB memory card and stereo wired headset included
  • 17 days standby
  • 88 grams

So while the Nokia 2730 Classic’s not a fully featured phone by any stretch of the imagination, it is a damn fine everyday kind of thing. And, just take a look, it’s a pretty sexy little number too. Which is why we think this phone could be a surprise hit come the autumn when this thing is released. Even Nokia themselves aren’t talking up its prospects anywhere but in the so-called emerging markets, but we think the sheer unpretentiousness of the 2730 Classic is going to make it a firm favourite the world over. The world, we think, is very much ready for something that does what it’s supposed to, and does it well, without pretending to be what it’s not. And the classic is just that. Nokia 5630 XpressMusic

March 28th, 2009 admin No comments

In an attempt to really give the XpressMusic line a ‘oomph’ factor, Nokia unveiled the earlier ‘leaked’ Nokia 5630 XpressMusic, which is a mere 12mm thick and weighs an unbelievable 83 grams, making it the lightest as well as the slimmest S60 Nokia phone. The 5630 XpressMusic is clearly set to be the successor of the previously popular 5320, which was also targeted mainly at the teenage market.

Taking its position as the successor to the 5320 XpressMusic, the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic features a 3MPIX camera, better ‘Active Standby’ home screen, N – Gage gaming facilities and will also come with a 4GB microSD memory card.

It runs on the S60 platform and positions itself as a phone which is affordable, yet has some great multimedia features. As is the feature of XpressMusic phones, it sports a 3.5mm audio jack, which will enable you to use your own headphones if you prefer to do so, and has dedicated music keys (play/pause, next track and previous track). The phone also has the ‘Say and Play’ feature, which enables you to get the song by saying the name of the track or the artist.

Nokia
went ‘hell-for-leather’ with the connectivity side and gave the 5630 XM Wi-Fi, HSUPA, HSDPA, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, USB (charging also available) and Bluetooth. They also ‘attached’ their own Music Store to the phone. Some countries will also get ‘Come With Music’ as well. The N-Gage support will ensure that you have some superb games at your disposal.

The final feature that should be mentioned is the 3 megapixel camera, which also has autofocus with a LED flash and also has a microSD card slot.

The 5630 XpressMusic is expected to ship somewhere during the 2nd quarter of 2009 and will come with a 4GB memory card.

You can visit the official page to get more details about the phone.

Nokia 6710 Navigator

March 23rd, 2009 admin No comments

One of the many phones that Nokia unveiled during the MWC, the 6710 Navigator, along with the 6720, are the latest additions to the navigation series, which comprises of phones with an exclusive focus on the GPS features.

From what can be seen of the phone, the navigation solution given by the Nokia 6710 Navigator is supposed to be quite impressive and will provide you exactly everything you would come to expect of a dedicated GPS device, along with all the features you’d expect of a normal phone. The solutions involve an upgraded version of the Nokia Maps, which has real time ‘drive and walk’ feature, a large number of maps and hardware parts like the dedicated navigator key, big display useful for viewing outside the house and a touch area which will help you zoom in. All this is meant to make your life much easier. This is facilitated by the fact that the navigation softwares are pre-installed and are ready for use as soon as you purchase the phone.

The integration in recent times of Nokia Maps with Ovi enables you to plan your journey from the comfort of your home on your computer and sync this with your Nokia 6710 Navigator. In addition, Nokia Maps have been upgraded with a number of features such as very sharp pictures, weather service, events content, premium travel and 3D landmarks incorporated for more than 200 cities. It also has a compass which works in sync with Maps and enables the better working of the pedestrian navigation service.

The sales package also has a car-holder, which is a fairly useful item. You could also get yourself the Nokia Speakerphone, which is basically a pair of speakers which enables you to talk handsfree. Quite useful indeed!

Nokia 6720 Classic

March 20th, 2009 admin No comments

The Nokia 6720 Classic is the second navigator phone which was unveiled by Nokia @ the Mobile World Congress 2009 and it seems to be a more ‘high – powered’ navigator solution when compared to the 6710 Navigator, which seems to be down on other features except for the GPS.

The Nokia 6720 Classic can be said to be a upgrade of the 6220 classic, which has tri-band UMTS support and an HSDPA speed of 10Mbps or, in Nokia’s terms, Turbo 3G. From the pictures, you also would’ve noticed the curve at the bottom of the phone which is meant to improve handling of the phone, but I didn’t really feel much of an improvement, actually didn’t really seem to make much of a difference. There are a variety of different colors which are also available for the phone. The plastic body of the phone has a more classy look to it and doesn’t really feel cheap like the 6220 classic.

Other than these, the 6720 Classic is running on S60 3.2, just like the 6220, but, just like all of Nokia’s newer smartphones, it’s been given a facial upgrade in terms of all the icons so that they look very much like the ones on the S60 5th edition touch UI, which is being utilized by the 5800.
The last change that we could find in the Nokia 6720 Navigator was with regard to the battery life. It is more beefy in terms of capacity, having a capacity of 1050 mAh, rather than the 900 of the 6220, which just means that the battery will last longer and you will be able to talk for more time.

The 6720 is set to be released in the second quarter of 2009 at a price of 245 euros before any taxes.

The Nokia 8208 has a wide array of features and will make sure that every head turns with its awesome design, which is really great considering the fact that there aren’t a lot of phones out there which have good looks and awesome functionality at the same time.

The Nokia 8208 has a dual – slide form factor and gives you plenty of multimedia options with a very impressive MP3 player and a sharp 3 Megapixel camera. The 8208 also enables the easy access to the music with its music – dedicated keys (play / pause, next track and previous track). You’d also be able to listen to music for upto 20 hours, which should enable non – stop entertainment. Make sure that those special moments in life aren’t left to pass with some crisp images from the 3 megapixel camera.

The memory card slot can support memory cards up to 16 GB, which will enable you to store upto 4000 songs in either MP3 or AAC+ format.
